Councilman for a day: Adolescent Criminal Responsibility System

Verez y Saberes Foundation, in partnership with the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF), developed the initiative "Councilman for a Day", a space where 20 young people from the Juvenile Penal System were able to experience the power of citizen participation and democratic exercise. This event aimed to offer these young people an opportunity for learning and empowerment, allowing them to explore their role in building a more just and inclusive environment.

Throughout the day, participants immersed themselves in the world of local politics. Together with Councilmans and experts, they discussed the challenges facing their community and proposed innovative and viable solutions. This experience not only gave them a deeper understanding of how local government works, but also reinforced the importance of their voice in decision-making processes.

"Councilman for a Day" was a transformative space that allowed young people from the ICBF Juvenile Penal System to discover their potential as agents of change. By providing them with tools and knowledge, this event demonstrated that all young people, regardless of their situation, can contribute significantly to the development of their communities when given the opportunity to actively participate.

By the way, in our experience, those guys were the ones more challenging for Councilmans and ourselves! We really would like to repeat this experience.

We thank all those who made this experience possible and reaffirm our commitment to building inclusive spaces that promote youth leadership.
